Introducing a New Cat to Your Cat

Will the behavior of your cat change when introducing a new cat in the house? Cats are loners. It is very difficult to find cats hanging out in groups. With this in mind, one will require patience and time to introduce a new cat into their home. The resident cat may not take too well to a newcomer; therefore expect some aggressive behavior with a new cat for the first few days or weeks.

To manage the aggressive cat when introducing a new cat to a home, take some days to transition both cats to accepting each other. Your resident cat may not take too kindly to a new addition to the family, therefore, expect some behavior change with a new cat around the house.

How to Manage Their Behavior After Introducing a New Cat In The House

Seperate Spaces when Introducing a new catSeparate Spaces

To avoid the possible hissing and spitting with a new cat that may ensue when you put two strange cats in one home, create a separate space for the new cat. This will give both cats the opportunity to get used to having the other around without necessarily bumping into them. This will reduce negative changes with new cat suddenly introduced.

First Sighting

When they first see each other, expect the initial behavior when introducing a new cat to be an attack stance, and then a hasty retreat. Keep in mind that before they see each other, you need to have familiarized them with each other’s scent to counter any undesirable change with a new cat. The behavior with a new cat will be to retreat into the room you have set aside for it.

In Each Other’s Space

Once the two cats have become accustomed to each other’s scent, and have sighted each other, it is time to let them spend some time together. Do not expect the cat with a new cat to be instantly friendly. You may try to make the two cats meet, but it is better to let nature take its course. Curious cats when introducing a new cat will cause them to come into contact sooner than later.

The Environment

To encourage healthy and positive acting with a new cat in the house, once the cats have met each other, you can bring their feeding bowls into the same room, and also put all their toys in the same room. This will create a friendly space to enable the cats to continue with everyday activities in each other’s presence.

Rejection

It is possible that there will be outright rejection when familiarizing the new cat to your home. If it seems like the two cats do not like each other at all and continued aggression and fighting occurs, you may need to find another home for the new cat.

Be Patient With Resident Cat’s Behavior With a New Cat Around

Be patient when your resident cat displays some altered behavior with a new cat around. She is used to ‘owning’ all the space and suddenly has to share it with a stranger. Depending on how you distribute your love and affection, and how you handle their initial days together, your two cats may accept each other and become friends. In the instances where it seems the two cats will never be friends, and your desire is to have a second cat, you can try again with a different cat.
